Interpretive Categories: oven burning layer

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: 0.42 m E-W x 0.38 m N-S

Discussion: Small, sub-semi-circular patch of material at entrance to oven F269, overlying both the hard platform outside the oven and the edge of the internal blackened oven floor. Consists of a very thin firm crust above darker finer layers of alternating soft and hard material (excavated as compound layer as very thin layer impossible to excavate individually). Appears to be uppermost layer of oven external platform and overlying oven base. However, layer of extended platform below appears to continue beneath oven floor, suggesting a possibly complex multi-phase oven construction.

Recognition: Patch of grey-brown sediment at entrance of F269.

Definition: Clear, pale surfaced deposit, below red/orange oven debris + overlying orange brown material.

Execution: Leaf trowel.

Condition: Dry.

Consistency: firm surface and friable underneath

Colour: 2.5 Y 6/2 light brownish grey (surface); 10 YR 4/2 dark greyish brown (below)

Texture: sandy silt loam

Bedding: compound layered

Inclusions: abundant (>10%) tiny white fibres

Post-depositional Features: none apparent

Basal Boundary: clear/smooth/anthropogenic
