Unit 4441
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Infilling
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This layer represents the southern third of the basal unit of 4321. It was very shallow and its removal showed layer 4444, an organic reisdue, covering the floor below. This layer 4444 seemed to consist of coprolite and/ or phytoliths and may therefore have been used for animals after its human occupation and before its deliberate infill with 4321 and 4439-4441.
I noted that there was more larger, but in poor state of preservatin, bones nearer the southern section than to the north end of this layer. Can't say whether this represents a very localised dump or activity beyond the southern section.
Recognition: As far 4439
Definition: Southern third of base of 4321, north-4410, south-section, east-west wall of anti-chamber to Shrine 10, Building 6
Execution: As for 4439
Condition: As for 4439
Consistency: As for 4439
Colour: As for 4439 but without orange patches
Texture: As for 4439
Bedding: As for 4439
Inclusions: As for 4439
Post-depositional Features: As for 4439
Basal Boundary: Very sharp distinct basal boundary as this layer peeled off outer layer 4444, an organic layer rich in coprolites/ phytoliths, also this layer is very hard, being a deposit (?) on a building floor, also it came off 4447 a burnt fill in hearth 4448 along the south section. Also peeled off a niche (feature 480) in the south-western corner of the room. Also filled crawl hole (feature 490) in wall leading into space 163 to the east. While it was easy to remove this layer off wall 484 it was harder to define and remove it off the south-eastern end of wall 479.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot sample 2620 - fully analyzed Infill/floor transition in Space 173. in addition to the flot sample there was a small amount of dry sieved material. This seems to be mainly composed of a few large bones broken into many fragments. The colour is generally light brown, and in the flot sample shades to dark brown. There is very little burning. Taxa include both 07 and 03 size animals but none that can be identified to species. Last Number = F.26Figurine Records: No Ground Stone Records: Yes
