Discussion: On further excavation of crawl hole 500 (deposit 4321 which Richard had left in to support the bricks on top of 500) was found to include brick fragments to south which appeared to have been deliberately placed-either this is a coincidence or at time of infilling used as blocking for support. At one stage we wondered whether it formed part of a rebuild of the crawhole but overall it was very similar to 4321 so was removed as such. At the base was a shallow scoop/ cut the fill of which was separated as 4721, though similar to 4321 it contained lenses of wall plaster (see sketch) implying that the scoop/ cut was open at various stages of wall plastering. Interpretations possible worth area of 'threshold' in crawlhole or some kind of post support for the crawlhole or that the overlying 4321 was different and a later modifcation and that the scoop/ cut was a foundation for it.
