Interpretive Categories: Floor layers

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)

Dimensions: 3.18 N-S x 2.63 x o.15m max. depth

Discussion: 4511 was a multi-layered deposit, including two levelling/make-up layers (one - the uppermost deposit, was 20mm thick. The other, between two bands of floor layers - approx. 40mm thick.) The two bands of floor layers, were both 20mm thick on average. The upper band consisted of sevsn clearly visible layers, though the number, consistency , and type, varied throughout the deposit, according to wear. For example, very thin plaster layers were occ., partly visible. The lower band of floor layers also varied in type and consistency, but had a distinct lower plaster floor, which survived throughout about 60% of the deposit. Floor layers in both bands, varied from 1mm or less, up to about 4mm max. 4511 lies immediately above pre-level 10 infill, in the NE. corner of Space178. Greatest overall thickness was 0.15m max., against wall F.482, at 4511's N. limit.

Consistency: Firm

Colour: Light to mid., to v. dark browns. Off-white plaster.

Texture: Clayey silt (approx. 30/70) lime plaster. Clayey, sandy silts (approx. v. fine sand 30%, clay 30%, silt 40%) within levelling/make-up layers. Sandy, clayey silts (approx. v. fine sand 40%, clay 10%, silt 50%) within the light to mid. brown floor layers. The darker floor layers are more clayey, and less sandy, silts. (Approx. average: 30-40/10-20/50).

Bedding: Layered

Inclusions: Occ. small to med. bone. V. occ. small obsid. and shell. V. occ. small to med. stone and clay ball. All <2%. Mod. charcoal fl.<2%. Mod. to freq., v. small, white siliceous plant remains. (Particularly abundant within light to mid. brown floor layers) <5%.

Post-depositional Features: Heavily truncated by Mellart's excavations, and cuts 4510 and4958.

Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, abrupt to diffuse, distinct to faint, smooth to slightly wavy.
