Unit 4739
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven demolition/backfill
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.36m N-S; 0.50m E-W; - up to approx. 0.10m
Discussion: Mixed deposit - burnt material (dark brown) and orange frags. of fired material which look like very typical oven construction frags; - grey clay/silt; white plaster/floor material. All very mixed & with finds mixed in. - Appears to be oven demolition material deliberately used as backfill.
Later decided that this unit should have been excavated as two separate units - the brown scorched material on the surface separate from the demolitio material underneath. Will retain (4739) as the number for the demolition as the bulk of the material consisted of this & take out a fresh number for the surface scorching. (4967) - RT 14/7/99

Unit description: Oven fill from the central oven in building 23, space 178. Excavator did not know/would not tell us what the feature number was and the unit sheet is not on the computer or in the excavators lab at any time during work hours during the last week. Fill is light brown in colour with a few small burnt pieces. There is one piece of 03 skull, two tiny pieces of antler and one unfused proximal tibia epiphysis of a small mammal. Overall the unit appears similar to the house fill and is probably demolition backfill, not related to the use of the oven.
