Unit 4905
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Room infill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.1 x 0.05-0.15
Discussion: Semi-arbitrary layer removing 'lumps' of fill in north-east corner of 173 and trying to define its relationships to the northern arm of bin F 488.
- Subsequently expanded as room fill below bins and floor in northern half of space. The northern 'arm' of bin F 488 is probably in fact the wall of the building below (aligned with north wall of 170).
- The deposit is generally dense and compact with a relatively large amount of charcoal. In patches (especially noticeable in the corners and along the walls) are more coherent lumps of plaster and brick significant plaster/ brick was apparent in the middle of the space, south of where floor (4910) ran out-this formed a 'ridge' against which the floors to the south (4912) were laid. Although of rather different composition to the material further north there was no clear northern edge to the 'ridge' so it is not a dividing wall. But found to overlie earliest floors in southern half of room-so must postdate 4905 proper.
Recognition: Mixed deposit underlying bin areas and plaster, sculptures in north half of 173
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Firm and dry
Consistency: Firm (hard in patches)
Colour: Generally mid-brown with grey patches
Texture: Silty clay loam
Bedding: Massive (quite dense)
Inclusions: >2% small charcoal fragments, sizeable lumps/ patches of plaster/ brick, patches with frequent small phytoliths (not artefacts), c5-10% plaster, 2-5% coherent brick rubble
Post-depositional Features: A few fine/ medium roots
Basal Boundary: Arbitrary

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
