Unit 4921
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: The matrix consists of c 40% dark brown material with flecks of charcoal. The remainder is lumps and patches of coherent brick and plaster rubble. The former includes at least twp types-one mid to dark brown with frequent small clay fragments. The other a finer silty pale brown matrix. The plaster includes thin lens of floor/ wall derived material as well as larger lumps (?mouldings). Many brick/ plaster fragments are up to 25cm across. Some large fragments in the north-west corner of the room were associated with a quantity of rodent bones (?possible owl pellets-see 4948).
A higher density of plaster was noted against the west wall->50% generally pale brown. No cut was readilt apparent to account for this but the working section suggests some tip lines slanting down from east to wesr.
4921 is essentially the same as 4905 but represents the 'uncontaminated' infill definitely below the floors and features in the north half of 173.
Recognition: Rather arbitrary beneath 4905-number changed because 4905 may include material associated with room above eg pit 4918
Definition: Confined by walls to north. east. west and section line to the south
Execution: Mattock
Condition: Dry at top, more moist lower down
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Generally dark brown with patches of light brown and light yellowish brown reflecting different brick. plaster inclusions
Texture: Silty clay (in general)
Bedding: Massive (mixed but not layered)
Inclusions: 1-2% charcoal small/ medium (up to 5% in patches)
Post-depositional Features: Not evident
Basal Boundary: Diffuse

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This is a medium to large unit. Generally not many diagnostics but taxa sheep/goat, cattle equid, boar. And the body parts are for sheep/goat: teeth, some diagnostic long bones, carpals and tarsals, phalanges. For cattle diagnostics are: teeth, a metapodial and phalanges. For equid and boar only teeth are diagnostic. The scap, however shows that both, for 07 and 03 size category, there are long bones, rib, vertebrae and skull. Fragmentation is high even some phalanges are broken. Less than 10% has been burned. The burned ones are mostly low temperature (burnt, black in color), but some high temperature fragments can be observed (calcined, white in color). Only one or two pieces seem to have gnawing. And very few pieces have been digested (less than 5%). Generally weathering stages are 2 or 3. Not much high or low weathering stages exist (less than %5 is fresh, approximately %5 of fragments weathered at high stages). This unit does not have coherence. The taxa is not concentrating on a specific fragment. Not many diagnostic bones can be seen as mentioned before. By looking at the variety of fragment types and different surface condition, the mixed material, it seems like a room fill. Material arrived from different events and consumption. Seems like (by looking at not very high weathering stages) it has been buried quickly. More material arrived at end of 2000 study season; all nondiagnostic long bone splinters, most burned. Does not change understanding of unit. [sm] Last number = 220Figurine Records: Yes
