Discussion: Area of ashy spread, most probably rake out, towards the south of space 173. Earlier than all of the fire installations so far excavated but probably relating to earlier to earlier scorching exposed beneath floor make-up (4938). 

Recognition: Area of ashy, burnt material 

Definition: Contrasting with surrounding unburnt layers 

Execution: Trowel from edges 

Condition: Slightly moist and friable 

Consistency: Friable 

Colour: Grey, beige, black and reddish brown 

Texture: Silty clay 

Bedding: Layered 

Inclusions: 10% charcoal flecks, <5% medium bone fragments, <2% medium clay ball fragments, small obsidian fragments, small shell fragments and small stones 

Post-depositional Features: Some root and insect disturbance, some salts 

Basal Boundary: Clear, smooth, anthropic
