Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 1.53m (E-W), 1.40m (N-S), 0.04m deep
Discussion: 4987 was a compound layer composed of one obvious floor surface and the occupation debris and floor make-up associated with this in the 'dirty' south east corner of building 23/ space 178. The upper surface of the deposit was continuous with that overlying the 'clean' floor contained in unit 4988. To distinguish this surface and clarify its status within the matrix, it was distinguished as a separate unit 5090, although it was removed with its associated 'clean' and 'dirty' deposits. The occupation deposits contained within 4987 were unusual in their high obsidian content which is probably related to the three obsidian clusters within the layer (4989, 4990 and 5005). This suggests that the area was used during this time both as somewhere to eposit waste form the ovens nearby, and for the production of obsidian tools. This is a rare example of in-situ obsidian tool production, so each flake that was found within the layer was accurately located to assist with refitting. The survival of an almost continuous floor layer above the area also marked a change from the later floors in the area (see 5090). Dry Sieve Information: Unknown if any dry seive
Consistency: mostly friable
Colour: varied between lenses - mainly mid greyish-brown with patches of black, pale ashy grey, orangish-brown, pale yellowish-white andpale brown

Inclusions: varied between lenses - high charcoal and fragmented bone content, also plaster flecks, clay lumps and occasional flecks of phytoliths, coprolite and shell
Post-depositional Features: heavy salt encrustation in places
Basal Boundary: distinct to the west, but more difficult to follw to the east where the various cuts through it made matters more complicated
