Unit 5243
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: make up for floor, surfaces
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: c1.5 x 1.4 x 0.01-0.03m
Discussion: Essentially same material as 5242, though 5243 underlies 5240 whlile 5242 was a continuation of material akin ro 5238 south of surface 5240. On excavation, however, both 5242 + 5243 appeared to comprise scrappy surfaces + were clearly distinct from the fills above. Their limits were harder to trace except where 5243 came onto clear plaster surfaces 5245 /5246. In the south of 5243 + especially under 5242 a coherent equivalent surface was hard to detect + the western part of 5242 seems to comprise plastery collapse with no evidence of floors (see plaster lumps on 676, 678) - there may be a cut feature (?post retrival pit) here that remains to be adequately defined
Recognition: material below 5240 which was not an obvious surface (as 5244, 5245)
Definition: N boundary real if not always clear, S boundary (with 5242) rather arbitrary + probably same deposit.
Execution: trowel
Condition: dry
Consistency: firm
Colour: brown / greyish brown
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: compound layered: a typical section around 971N comprises grey brown layer (c8mm thick) over a mid-brown layer (c1cm thick) with a very thin plaster lens between
Inclusions: c5% plaster frags, c2% charcoal flecks
Post-depositional Features: as 5240
Basal Boundary: clear or uncertain depending on nature of underlying surface

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
