Interpretive Categories: surface

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: 1.95 x 1.35 x 0.02-5m

Description: surface N of space 182. Mixed in composition - description below is for piece at S end but may differ elsewhere

Discussion: Mixed surfaces / occupation equivalent to 5231/4 in south of space. This is the latest ocupation in the area with numerous in-situ (or at least untrampled) finds. The matrix itself is very mixed including orange deposits (as in 5231), scrappy plaster surfaces - much less coherent than 5234 - and areas of phytoliths - which were not found in the south of the space.
The centre of the space was disturbed by ?later cut features - particularly on the west side - and there was no direct connection between 5240 and 5234 (the latter lying a few cm higher in this area). However, they must be contemporary given the similarity of the occupation deposits and joining sherds (5240 X.17 joins 5231 X16-20).

Consistency: friable (firm in places)

Colour: orange / mid-brown

Texture: silty loam (orange soil) / silty clay (brown makeup)

Bedding: compound layered - here is mixed deposit c2cm thick consisting of 'orange' surface over brown soil with flecks of charcoal + plaster, then a discontinuous lower 'orange' which had phytoliths at its base.

Inclusions: c10%whitish plaster, c5% brick fragments, 2% small scharcoal, 2% phytoliths (to c4mm) (NB some of the phytolith layer 5244 came off with this deposit, as with 5238)

Post-depositional Features: some loose patches and cracks (probabaly from driving in shoring)

Basal Boundary: sharp over 5244, becoming more diffuse to S

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This unit has been determined as an occupation area, thus 11 flotation samples (sample numbers: 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 47, 48, 49) has been taken from that unit. And all the big bones that has been found, (one radius with ulna attached, one rib fragment and a long bone fragment, which all belong to a large animal) were recorded as X-finds (X8 and X13). Fragments are mostly weathering 2 or 3 and some burned pieces can be observed. Exceptionally sample 40 has some light color bone fragments in it. In addition to that sample 40 has a small mammal long bone and a fish bone that are again light in color. At the rest of the samples, just sample number 43 has a small mammal light color long bone. With the exception of sample 40, the fragments in the other samples seem trampled and rolled (the area might be floor). Last number = 34
