Unit 6250

Category: layer    dug in 1999

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: platform

Dimensions: 40 x 15 cm

Discussion: According to the grid set in space 88, W corner of the platform was excavated as a separate unit. This corner was removed by layers of plaster that were part of the last plastering of the floor. It was done first until the layer of plastering that was black burnt. It was possible to establish the lower part of the platform (towards the south) was curving because it was added later to the smaller platform that existed along N wall. Also it was possible to connect it to the line that appears on the other side of the grid. In removing this platform edge up to the grid line it was possible to establish two large blocks of building material - samples (S6 & 7). Also, inside this older platform a group of objects was found (antler tool, bone spatula, an obsidian tool and bits of ocher, all in an immediate association) This was probably deliberately placed into the plaform. On the bottom of the platform appeared clearly a line of plastered surface (vertically) which indicates a truncated feature that is at the level of bin floor - unit 6240. It is not clear is this closing wall of the bin (6240) or another feature that extends underneath the bulk left from the platform on the lines of the grid. After removing this bulk it would become clear which is the case. Concerning already mentioned blocks of building material of platform (along the wall) (samples 6 & 7) they were almost whole taken as respective samples in this unit and were as if separated as different units. Thus, for any possibility of chronological difference in their placement, it would be possible to use these samples. It was fairly easy to separate this two layers of the platform build up during the excavation.
Also since another sample of ochre was uncovered close to the N wall, that is the only one properly plastered and with bits of red-painted plaster on it, it could be expected that some other features as these described above could be expected in the present bulk of the platform.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: X1 is an antler tool. X2 is a preform for a fake red deer canine bead. According to the unit sheet, these tools and an obsidian tool were found as a distinct special deposit in the platform. A tiny unit in terms of dry sieved material. There is more sheep-size than large mammal, all quite fragmented and most rather worn. No burning or digestion. One fish bone fragment. Looks like fairly clean fill, or the patina suggests construction material. Sample 2 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. This is a moderate size sample. It is mostly little crumbles, although some are modern breaks, and a few pieces range up to 5-6 cm. More or less equal amounts of sheep-size and large mammal. There is a pile of cattle horn core crumbles, and most of the large mammal skull fragments may also be strutting from the horn core. This is possibly part of the special deposit, although it is not noted as such. It would not have been a very large piece, only a few cm, so may be nothing in particular. Otherwise, there are mostly worn little crumbles but a few quite fresh bits, with some burning and digestion. Mostly looks like construction material, although dirtier than your average platform.
