Unit 6531
Category: layer dug in 2000
Area: Trench I
Interpretive Categories: Roof/ceiling,Screen wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: building; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 1.67m EW x 0.7m NS (possibly +0.65m NS)
Description: Rubble layer within Space 190 collapse
Discussion: This appears to be either ceiling/roof or a screen wall collapsed into the room, sloping north to south. It consists largely of lumps of rammed earth (pise) up to 15 x 10cm and c. 5cm thick, along with large chunks of plaster, some with a red painted surface. The pise contains strong imprints of reeds and many phytoliths, indicating that it was rammed onto a red structure such as matting, hence roof/ceiling interpretation. The surrounding matrix, mostly in the lower part of the layer, is a fine, loose soil.
Recognition: Lumpy material beneath loose layer 6523
Definition: Edges largely defined by walls around Space 190; upper and lower surfaces by change from rubble to fine, loose soil, and vice versa
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Hot, sunny, dry, windy. Poor visibility - sun
Consistency: Very firm chunks of pise 80%, very crumbly plaster 5%, very loose surrounding (mainly underlying) matrix 15%
Colour: Pise 2.5Y 5/2 greyish brown
Texture: Clay 60%, silt 30%, fine sand 10% (pise)
Bedding: Convoluted/massive
Inclusions: Pot, large, <5%; bone <5%, obsidian <2%, phytoliths <10%
Post-depositional Features: Animal holes, roots, grave cut (Byzantine)
Basal Boundary: Undulating, accidental

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
