Unit 6542

Category: layer    dug in 2000

Area: Trench I

Interpretive Categories: Collapse/fill

Data Category Information: Location: building

Dimensions: 1.72m EW x 1.32m NS

Description: Plaster-rich collapse in fine, loose matrix

Discussion: Rubble and plaster infill - presumably collapse. Lots of red painted plaster, plus pieces of daub/pise with reed impressions suggesting roofing/ceiling material or a light screen wall. It didn't come to a proper surface but cleaned off a whitish phytolith/salting deposit on the next layer of rubble, suggesting episodes of infill or collapse, followed possibly by levelling or a period of being left open before the next lot of fill came in.

Recognition: Difference from overlying rubble 6531

Definition: Contained by walls on three sides and Mellaart section on the fourth. Texture/matrix differs from over- and underlying deposits

Execution: Hand pick, trowel

Condition: Hot, dry, sunny, crowded

Consistency: Friable, crumbly plaster 40%, loose matrix 40%, rubble 20%

Colour: Plaster 5Y 6/2 light olive grey with dark red paint on one surface of much of it; soil 2.5Y 5/3 light olive brown
