Discussion: Unit 8874 comprises a later wall and an odd construction, which looks like half-arch sitting on top of the white clay/plaster (U. 8871).
25.07.04
This unit was openned in order to remove bricks of the ''half-arch'' feature and double wall F. 1454, which seems to be on top of white plastery stuff (8871) and to be on surface only. Since F. 1454 seems to go deeper, we removed only one course of bricks, while the half-arch feature was completely removed today. It consisted of 2 rows of bricks, both of them more or less preserving the half-arch shape for some reason. The inner part of the half-arch (abutting F. 1454) was filled with mortar and small pieces of bricks. The 2 rows of bricks have been planned.
Basically the entire feature abutted the corner of a double cut wall F. 1454 and the main N wall of sp. 226. Since its purpose seemes be a nivelation of the NE corner of 'cul de sac'' of sp. 226 it was not given a feature number. In case that it had a different function (which explains its unusual shape), we were not able to find out what was it, because of the erosion processes.
Underneath this unit there was a construction rubble (levelling) layer - U. 8863.

Volume roughly calculated (FS 24/6/09).
