Unit 8892
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: E-W 6.70 m); N-S 1.50 m (E part), 2.50 m (W part)
Discussion: U. 8892 comprises the next block of midden layers in the S part of sp. 226. We started removing this layer because we wanted to release the S wall of sp. 226 as well as the yellow nivelation layer in the SE part of "cul de sac"of sp. 226. We also wanted to release the S wall of sp. 243. (F. 1453).
A layer ca. 15-30 cm was removed on area measuring 6.70 x 1.50-2.50 m. It was quite strong and compact in the W part of the unit and friable - in the easternmost part.
The removed layer consisted of big number of thin layers - compact clay, ashy lenses, silty clay layers, charcoal layers. In the easternmost part of the unit the midden was mixed with an thin eroded layer (coming from the S wall of sp. 226 amd the E wall of sp. 243.
The midden deposit (U. 8892) was very strong and compact along the central part of F. 1458.
It yielded a large amount o animal bones, obsidian chips amd tools/blades, small stones, nimerous pottery sherds (sevaral Late Roman ones inclussively - L. Roman burials nearby), several bone awls and a very well preserved oval stamp seal (x-find 1).
The stamp seal was found in the E part of the unit; no cut or a related structure was visible.
After removal of U. 8892 it appeared that F. 1453 probably consists of 2 walls - see F. sheet F. 1453.
NB! 2 small pieces of glass were found in an animal hole, while excavating U. 8892, therefore there are intrusions in this unit.
