Unit 8877
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden - arbitrary layer
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: Yet onother arbitrary layer of midden in the S part of sp. 226 or the proper "street". We stayed in the outline of previous unit (U. 8869) (where the division between proper midden and "middeny packing"of the "activity surface" was not noticed and followed) only narrowed down in the NW extent to account for the expected slope. Expected, because we were not quite able to follow it. Depth of the layer was about 15 cm to 1 cm. (W-E). Otherwise a typical layered midden with the continued trend of large, less processed and definitely not trampled animal bones (and other material). Possible trampling is seen in the section where there are 2-3 layers of more homogenous, compact deposits, but we will have to wait for the results of the micromorphology analysis. With this unit the S wall of sp. 226 (F. 1458/1464) floated out completely.
In the bottom of the unit a big pit was regognized (U. 8882, 8883), which we unfortunately went through without noticing it. My best guess would be that it was cut somewhere in the middle (depthwise) of U. 8869. Since both the pit and the bottom of the unit seem to be running under the "middeny packing", we will stop excavating the "street" and concentrate on the N part of sp. 226
This unit was not prioritized.
See U. 8880 for the cluster of a animal bones (cattle skull chopped into 3 pieces).
Final cleaning of the unit against the S wall (F. 1458) (it actually goes below it as I already mentioned) showed evidence of an open fire place "in situ". Ther was not any construction, just scorched clay, ca. 65 cm long (W-E). However we cleaned ca. 10 cm (N-S) of it, because it extends to the S, below F. 1458/1464. The scorched layer is ca. 2 cm thick, with hard black surface (It is 83 cm to the E from the W section of the area - see didiplan 04.07).
After we finished excavating the unit and scraped the surface, we realized that we have missed a pit, which was probably dug into the unit from the level of U. 8869 and that we have its lower deposit. It was given numbers 8882 (fill) and 8883 (cut). It was most probably sealed by U. 8864.
X-find 3 - it is possible that it is related to the piece of skull under which it was discovered.
Open fire place: the fire place is located 5 cm below the lowest brick of F. 1464, 83 cm to the E from the W section of sp. 226.
It is 65 cm long and 2 cm thick. It consists of skorched clay, black on the surface and dark brown below.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
