Unit 1561
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: cut fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: posthole; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 0.38x0.44x0.15-0.32
Discussion: Possible foundation cutting beneath wall 96/57 with charcoal/ash "midden" layers beneath. Continues beneath the East-West wall to the north distinctly, but the Eastern and Southern edges were extremely complex and hard to define. There appeared to be various layers and lenses of ashy/charcoal; clay; and more variable material which were difficult to interrelate. Towards the base of the cut a complete equid scapula (X1) was found, beneath which another large bone seems to extend into the charcoal/ash "midden" layer beneath.
Execution: trowel
Condition: hot sunny - few clouds

Unit description: X1 is an equid scapula placed under the corner of a wall in a foundation cut. A few odd bits accompany it but seem to have no relation. The rest of the fill is in 1526; the bits here look consistent with that but lack the larger pieces (probably because the excavator was only aiming to pick up the scapula in this unit. The intact scapula in otherwise redeposited middeny fill argues for a foundation deposit. Sample 2 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Small sample of mostly tiny crumbles, a few up to 2-3 cm. Most look rather worn; background noise. Some burning and digestion.Figurine Records: Yes
