Dimensions: NS: 40 cm; EW: 40 cm; Depth: 30 cm
Discussion: This area was created as an artifical unit within u. 16973. The reason for this method of sounding was to establish the interface or transition between this layer of roomfill and the level below. This allowed for a small area to be excavated rather than the entire space, although the samples were sacrificed due to their potentially mixed nature. This option and its reprocutions was discussed with JMR and EUR. The small window within the layer allowed the recoginition of the lower, more ashy but also compact layer (u. 16980). From the edges of the sounding work continued in u. 16973 following the interface between the two. From this stratigraphic point of view, the decision to open this artificial unit was successful.
