Unit 20472
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden arbitrary layer
Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: 2,6m NS x 2,6m EW x 0,2 deep
Discussion: Unit 20472 was an arbitrary layer in the midden. We followed a clay layer of midden, being the basal boundary of U.19486, removed it and the underlying layers of midden in the whole space up to the wall F. 3679 in the N and cut U.20439 in the E, up to a depth of about 0.2m in the unit. The layer was very heterogeneous. The thin clay layer was a few centimetres thick in the southern part of the arbitrary layer; it was full of burnt, large clay lumps in the northern half. Below it we encountered different parts of the midden (which were mostly discontinuous). A brownish/dark orange layer was full of charcoal with a couple depositions of hackberry (up to 20cm in diameter), a blackish ashy layer with fine worked bone tools, and a light grey powdery, ashy layer.
Recognition: Arbitrary layer of midden different colour than around.
Definition: Up to walls in S and N, up to section wall in W, up to cut in E
Execution: trowel, hoe
Condition: dry and hot
Consistency: loose in the S and firm in the N
Colour: mixed layered, light yellow, light grey, blackish, and light brown lenses
Texture: clay, silty clay, ash
Bedding: layered, yellowish clay layer at the top, few centimeters thick in the S, and about 15cm in the S with ashy lenses, light grey brown and blackish layers under it, of varying thickness and size
Inclusions: abundancy of charcoal and ashy inclusions in all layers except the clay layer (which contained burnt clay inclusions of sizes up to 12cm, as well as medium sized burnt oven pieces). All layers contained lots of artefacts (obsidian, worked bone and clay objects) and organic inclusions (bones and hackberry)
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows, plant roots
