Discussion: Top layer of mudbrick in building 1 - survives for 7 courses throughout most of the building. Associated with mortar (2149) - not always very clear to distinguish in elevation or excavation, but texture is fairly distinctively different. Represents either rebuilding or change in brick/mortar type during construction. 

 

Execution: pick & trowel 

Condition: hot & dry 

Consistency: moderately to very firm 

Colour: 7.5 YR 4/6 (strong brown) 

Texture: clayey loam 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: charcoal <5mm <2%; clay frags <5 mm <2% 

Post-depositional Features: fine roots 10-15%; animal burrows <2%; burning, variable (see plan) 

Basal Boundary: very sharp, fairly distinct, flat
