Discussion: The purpose of this unit was the removal of the remaining orangish clayey dirt that was on top of very loamy, bonefilled pit stuff (described in unit sheet 2214 and 2229). So, essentially this unit was a triangle in NW corner of the drawing. In section, on the walls of the baulk one can see how sharply this layer slopes down to reach its lowest point in the NW corner of the triangle (the angle of the slope being about 30-35 degrees).

Attention, X find 8 was noted as X2 due to mistake. (Actually, I think there is no X.8 --AMV 6/99).

Add N. of the baulk yellow bricky midden. The bricky midden flips off the black midden (2229) easily and underneath is a layer of salts mixed with large lumps of charcoal (S.3). Layer thickens towards N. Can barely distinguish it from tumble which is about 1 meter N. of EW baulk.

Inclusions: bone <2%, very little charcoal, some roots, chunky clay

Faunal Records: Yes Count of records:: 304  Unit description: X1 is a complete bone point on an unsplit distal tibia. X2 and X3 are pieces of worked antler. A certain amount seems to have been recorded earlier with no FUD, or else it has been lost (F1-69). However, there is a substantial amount of further material described here. This is a moderately large unit, with normal fragmentation. That is, things are pretty thoroughly processed for the most part, but there are lots of 5-10 cm fragments and a nearly complete equid pelvis. There are not very many diagnostics: mostly sheep/goat, with cattle appearing in the cranial material, including a fair bit of horn core, much of it burnt. There is also the mandible of a very young cow, and some very young large mammal long bone and rib fragments may also belong to this individual. All body parts are represented, as usual somewhat scanty on the ribs and especially vertebrae, especially for the large mammal. There are several odd human bones, possibly intrusive from the Byzantine burials. There is a fair amount of burning and a bit of digestion. Surface condition is generally good considering the proximity to the surface of the tell. In sum, there is some degree of coherence, and this looks like mostly daily post-consumption discard buried rapidly. That is, much more like midden than fill. The presence of a mandible fragment with one deciduous incisor still in place speaks to the lack of reworking of the deposit. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as diagnostics and flot frags. Generally similar in composition to the dry-sieved material, except that of course it includes the little crumbles and a bit of fish bone. Larger pieces are also present, though, including cattle skull and horn core and what must have been a sizable piece of at least one large mammal rib before it went through the flot machine. Also the tip of a boar tusk, perhaps related to the fragment from farther down in the dry-sieved. The perinatal cattle is not apparent here. A malleolus worn apparently from heavy trample indicates that perhaps some of the area was a high-traffic surface (or else this is redeposited from elsewhere).
