Unit 22617
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: foundation deposit for B. 129,room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This unit constitutes a massive deposit of processed construction material used to fill in B. 131 after abandonment. It was relatively clean, with minimal inclusions and finds. On top of this layer, the touristic walkway for the north shelter was constructed, explaining the source of any intrusive modern material (in addition to evident animal burrowing within the unit). The unit was stopped when we began to see a great deal of antler coming from the NW corner of space 500, and the presence of u. 22628-- an active, homogeneous dumping event-- was spotted in the SW corner of space 500. Across the room as a whole, the fill appeared much greyer and higher in clay content, although aside from these individual markers, the boundary between 22617 & 22635 is highly diffuse, and difficult to pinpoint with certainty. The change in the nature of the fill has led us to associate this fill with the construction of B. 129 & u. 22635 with the abandonment of B. 131, though this transition was probably more gradual than the disctinction makes it seem.
Consistency: varied-- friable to compact
Colour: primarily orange-- some black and dark grey mottling
Texture: sandy silt loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: animal bone, minimal charcoal
Post-depositional Features: animal burrowing, construction of N shelter walkway, burial cuts in space 77
Basal Boundary: diffuse-- identified by signs of activity & transition to more clay-y fill

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
