Unit 22650
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: post fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: posthole; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit represents the fill of the central posthole in space 500, the largest of the postholes we have identified. It was a fairly deep deposit of burnt soil, with a layer of leaves at least on the very top, identified by the phytolith specialists. They have suggested that the leaves may be associated with the wheat grains found stored in space 556 and against the oven F. 7953. At the bottom of the post fill we found three pieces of obsidian, all coming from Nenezi Daĝ, with one complete blade and one exhausted core. They had been subjected to different levels of burning, suggesting that the ones that were burnt had been placed in a fire prior to their deposition in the cut [u22664]. Finding caches of obsidian in postholes is a phenomenon attested elsewhere at Catalhoyuk, but this instance is interesting for what it implies about the order of events prior to the building's destruction.
