Unit 22656
Category: Cluster dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: New type glume wheat spikelets
Data Category Information: Location: building; Material: seeds; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: phytolith
Description: A deposit of new type glume wheat spikelets (4 pure liters after sieving and sorting) with chaff preserved, piled thickest against the north wall (F. 7711). In some places, the heat was high enough that the grains and chaff had turned to phytolith.
Discussion: This deposit of pure wheat grains was found underneath a layer of collapse and room fill that was extremely high in charcoal content. The wheat was preserved in spikelet form, and became apparent as a pure deposit of grains against the north wall. At the bottom of the grains was found a juvenile human femur, 22642.X1, which is a remarkable variation on the more typical animal bones or other objects found at the bottom of storage bins. The wheat was found with chaff intact, evidence of it being placed here for storage rather than in a post-processing form. The wheat in this cluster was a uniform variety, and was collected by Lara Gonzalez Carretero and Allison Mickel. The totality of the unit was collected as a sample and sieved in the archaeobotany lab.
