Unit 23066

Category: Layer    dug in 2017

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Wall plaster

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster); Basal Spit: unpainted

Discussion: Surviving wall plaster from entire southern wall of B.131 (F.7705). Two major patches survived to be excavated: in E part of side room (Sp. 504) abutting the internal wall (F.7708), and in the SE corner of main room (Sp. 500). All heat affected to various degrees and generally in a poor state of preservation, with the outermost layers almost certainly missing completely and the lower parts of the Sp. 500 patch 'melted' into the underlying brick. Took block from best-preserved part of Sp. 500 plaster as archive sample.

Consistency: Friable with some heat-affected areas consolidated with brick below and very hard.

Colour: Many white plaster layers (with varying orange and grey discoloration as heat-affected) w/ v. fine mid-grey layers between, sitting atop light- to mid-grey makeup.

Texture: Fine clay plaster layers

Bedding: Compound layers (basal makeup + plaster layers)

Inclusions: Chaff or similar vegetal matter in basal makeup

Post-depositional Features: Scorched variably by building closure fire; some areas consolidated with brick below, esp. lower on the wall.

Basal Boundary: Distinct constructional boundary (generally); obscured where plaster has fused with brick below due to fire.
