Description: U23430 was directly below U31418, covering more or less the same eastern area of Platform 7638.

Discussion: U23430 was a thin layer of plastered floor, maximum 1cm thick, heavily burnt. On the surface of this floor impressions of barley could be seen. These were recognised by the archaeobotanologist, Lara (UCL) who informed us of other such cases and suggested that this often happens when the Neolithic people would leave plants upon floor which were not completely dried yet. However, the frequency in which this is attested to on burnt floors of eastern Building 52 (U23437, U23442, U23438, U23447, U23443, U23461), may show that this was not a coincidence.
