Unit 2529
Category: skeleton dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: skeleton
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: tight crouched, fully articulated yet some limbs seem to have been wrenched out of place, e.g. L femur, L ulna. Left hand has dropped to a peculiar vertical position, and all limbs except L arm are extremely tightly flexed. Many voids were faunal in the surrounding soil, not just in the rib cage but around arms, legs, feet. Pelvis and feet very close to surface and rather damaged as a result. Many traces of phytolith - textile shroud or mat all around & below? skeleton, pieces on pelvis & L scapula; also dense grasses overlying the ribs. The L hand was way down by R elbow, with bones going below R femur. Heavy sooty black deposit with white layer on it, inside ribs, lying on R ribs.
I feel this body had been dead some time before being buried - tied up tight in a bundle. this permitted some bones, e.g. femur & ulna, to pull out of position, & L hand to drop, partly articulated, below R leg. R hand also in odd position. No sign of animal disturbance to account for this, nor does it follow pattern of root disturbance. Ribs crushed together also.
Condition: cold to warm. Movements restricted by time-lapse photo record, which required me to work from one place
X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 0; Target A - Y: 0; Target B - X: 0; Target B - Y: 0; Target C - X: 0; Target C - Y: 0; Target D - X: 0; Target D - Y: 0
Body: crouched, ariculated, spine NNW to SSE on right side in small cut. Tightly cmpressed
Head: on right side, chin bent towards knee, facing south
Right Arm: parallel to body, sharply bent with hand at chin
Left Arm: humerus over ribs, lower arm at 80 degrees, hand has dropped down vertically below arm
Right Leg: roughly below L leg, with foot up on pelvis, leg not as sloping as L one
Left Leg: knee very low by chin, steeply angled with foot on pelvis, tightly flexed - femur pulled out of pelvis socket
Other comments: general suggestion on very tight binding & body not being buried imediately, hence joints outof place, L hand out of place
Surface Modifications: Very badly damaged by roots, although they appear good at first sight
