Unit 2860

Area: South
Interpretive Categories: lining/oven
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.75 m N-S x 0.75 m E-W x 0.21 m high
Discussion: Distinctive red "lining" to oven, where in situ to north and east forming a partial dome, to south in the form of a vertical wall. Apperas to contain traces of fibrous material, or impressions? Red colour presumably due to heating , difference between this material and the "outer lining" (2843) maybe due to differential heating or due to a different construction material being used in the first place.
Recognition: Seen in a section at E end where CC had partially excavated in 1997 season. Also seen on S side where linging forms wall of oven. Distinctive pale red colour very easy to recognise.
Definition: Clear definition, colour/texture and contrast with layers (2852) and (2843).
