Unit 2873
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: foundation layer,infilling material
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.87 x 0.42 x 0.08
Discussion: (2873) was an extremely rich layer beneath the mortar of the upper two courses of wall [56] tothe west and beneath the upper course of wall [70] to the west where it was clearly visible in section, surrounding the upper course of [70] to the north and underlying it. On excavation, it was difficult to distinguish the basal boundary to the east . The material beneath was very similiar except where it overlay the upper course of wall [71] to the south. However to the west. it lay above a 'brick' of very diffirent material, so the excavation of the unit was stopped at this point.
It may possibly be the same as 2884 (SF)
Recognition: Very distinctive rich, material and much softer than surrounding units.
Definition: defined by cracking/salt crystalisation
Execution: Trowel and pick
Condition: soft but dry
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Light brownish grey 10YR 6/2
Texture: Very ashy silt
Bedding: Massive and well mixed
Inclusions: 10% charcoal - (flecks, small and large pieces); 5% plaster (flecks, small and large pieces) 5% bone (flecks, small and large pieces); 2-5% burnt clay (medium pieces); < 2% obsidian flacks; < 2% hackberries; <2%coprolite; <2% plant silicates
Post-depositional Features: Salt crystalisation and animal burrowing.
Basal Boundary: The basal bounday to the west was clear, prominent and constructional. To the east a similar layer of material descended deeper beneath the underlying context (3105) to the west, so the excavation of it was stopped.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
