Unit 2880
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: (2880) formed two courses of mortar in wall [56] (N-S wall to the west of space 117). It was clearly different to the brick of the wall but was fairly similar to (2883) which runs down the back of [56] to the west for the upper two courses. The lower layer of mortar lipped over the softer, more mixed deposit (2873) to the east, suggesting that (2873) might have been a foundation layer for [70] (which abutts [56]), after which, the final two courses of [56] were laid, followed by the two courses of wall [70] (already excavated)
Recognition: Clearly different from the brick in wall [56].
Definition: A sharp definition between bricks and mortar
Execution: Trowel and pick
Condition: Dry and crumbly
Consistency: Firm but less so than the brick
Colour: Greyish brown 10 YR 5/2
Texture: Ashy silt
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2 % plaster (flecks and small pieces); 2-5% bone (flecks and small pieces + some larger pieces) 2% plant silicates; <2% hackberrie; <2% shell ; <2% clay (10YR 6/6 brownish yellow)
Post-depositional Features: Animal burrowing and salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: A distinct basal boundary. Constructional and sharply defined from the mortar of [56]. The interface between these was fairly smooth, but uneven in places, and marked by salt encrustation
