Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Discussion: This unit probably represents the deposited material left as part of the occupational history of this space/building.* It is heavily burnt, as are the walls f.3948 and f.3984, which leads us to believe this deposit may have been left before the occupants had a chance to clean it when it was burnt and abandoned. The basal boundary is a rather poorly preserved plaster floor (u. 30273), which is difficult to identify because 1) the fire damaged it and 2) the collapsing walls damaged it. The main thing we noticed, at least from the beginning, about this unit is the amount of ash and charcoal it contained. There is especially noticeable a layer of thin charcoal-ash immediately above the remains of the plastered floor, which may represent either matting on the floor or roof material as part of the collapse, as alternatively:

*this may represent the first layer of destruction material associated with the building's destruction and abandonment. The number of complete vessels found in this layer suggest the destruction was actually quite sudden, or even intentional, in which case the difference between an occupation layer and a destruction deposit is quite blurred.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
