Unit 3109
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Foundation material,Infill
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: re-used brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.83 x 0.34 x 0.20
Discussion: (3109) represents a mixed ashy layer of material that was deposited above wall [71] to the south and up to the brick (3128) to the west. It appears to have been deposited later than both of these. It could have been some sort of foundation deposit in the early stages of building wall [56] to the west, as it was overlain by a 'return' brick of this wall, at its western extent. To the north of [71] it descended into a deeper hollow in which a right cattle scapula (X1) was placed, alongside several sheep/goat ribs. It can be debated whether this was an accidental dump, deliberate deposit of a broken tool, or deliberate 'symbolic' foundation deposit (according to the evidence of similar practices elsewhere on the site). The material immediately beneath this (3141) also contained ashy lenses, but was far richer in clay and plaster lumps, so was assigned a separate unit number.
Recognition: Distinctive because of its rich mixed composition and soft texture
Definition: Sharply defined to the west, where it ran up to a brick (3128), clearly overlying [71] to the east, but north of this, difficult to distinguish from the surrounding and underlying material
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Slightly moist
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Very variable: Main matrix - 2.5 Y 5/2 Greyish brown; plaster 2.5 Y 8/1 white; Burnt clay - 10 YR 4/2 Dark greyish brown; other baked clay - 7.5 YR 7/4 Pink
Texture: Bricky ash
Bedding: Massive and very mixed
Inclusions: 8% charecoal (various sizes - some quite large pieces); 8% plaster (various sizes - some large lumps) 5%burnt and baked clay (various sizes - some large lumps)<2% obsidian; < 2 % hackberries; <2% plant silicates
Post-depositional Features: Animal burrowing and salt encrustation.
Basal Boundary: Sharp and clear to the west where it overlay more bricky material, less distinct to the east where the underlying material was very similar intermingling surfaces.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This was a cluster unit for a scapula built into a wall blocking. X1 is the cattle scapula, almost complete, and recorded. In addition, there is Sample 2 >4mm flotation, 100% sorted. This looks like background noise from the blocking, probably mostly mortar. It has small pieces of mostly sheep-size animals, with fairly good surface condition but highly fragmented. A little burning, some digestion. Only four diagnostics, all sheep;/goat, three of them digested. No DZs, nothing measurable. One little shell pulled, possibly marine but I think just a deceptive break on the taller, thinner land snails.Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
