Unit 3172
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.39 x 0.32 x 0.211 m
Discussion: 3172 represents the brick material of wall 278. The upper course consisted of a singe squarish brick at the Westen end of the East-West running wall which seemed to have been placed in between 2 courses of wall 58. The course of 278 beneath this was a far longer brick, streching across most of the lenght of what was left of the wall. At the stage that the excavation of the samples for 3172 were excavated, it was difficult to tell how this wall filled into the wider scheme of the adjacent walls or how it had come to be left as it was on excavation.
Recognition: Sandy material in rectangular, brick-like form.
Definition: Clearly different from the mixed material to its South, the bricks of 58 to the West and those of 69 and 88 to the North.
Execution: Trowel and pick.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: Firm.
Colour: 10YR 6/4 light yellowish brown.
Texture: Sandy silt loam.
Bedding: Massive (and homogeneous).
Inclusions: 2% plaster flecks; 2% clay flecks; 5% plaster (flecks, small and medium sized lumps); occasional pebbles.
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation.
Basal Boundary: A clear sharp basal boundary, but it was sometimes hard to separate from the mortar material 3333 which was closely bounded to it. The surface between these was generally smooth and level.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
