Unit 3349
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.30 x 0.07 x 0.27 m
Discussion: (3349) represents a soft ashy deposit to the N of wall F.281, lying above its lower courses for the depth of the 2 courses of F.278 that were bounded to F.281. It was clearly different in composition to the infilling behind F.278 which lay to the W of it. However, it was also severly truncated by animal burrowing, which will have affected its make up. It is difficult to explain it other than as another layer of infilling behind wall F.278 at its E extent. It could also have been the product of the accumulated "dumped" deposits which were in the space to the E of F.281 which had become trapped in a gap to the N of the E end of wall F.278 and the S end of wall F.69.
Recognition: A softer, grayer, ashier material.
Definition: Defined by salt encrustation + cracking.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/3 light olive brown
Texture: ashy silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks and small pieces), 5% plaster (flecks, small, medium and large pieces), 5% clay, <2% plant, occasional hackberries, occasional tiny pebbles
Post-depositional Features: severely truncated by animal burrowing
Basal Boundary: clear/distinct/sharp/anthropogenic basal boundar; it overlay the back of the lower courses of F.281, but the surface between the two was completely disturbed by animal burrowing

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
