Discussion: This layer was started being dug at the NE corner where there were a lot of animal holes. I cleaned up the section of the animal holes to see how far the mixed deposit went to, and could not see a change in the soil at all. So I started digging there with a pick and went quite deep down. When I started coming to the middle of the room I noticed a layering event so I had to raise my level up to 7 cm at that point. After I raised that I dug about 30 cm eastwards and noticed an intense layering. At that point I moved on to the W part of the layer and continued digging there. Then the bear (?) claw came up in a very interesting position. The deposit it was in was actually different than what I was digging so after consultations, the claw was given a cluster number which is (3603) and the layering got figured out,so that was the end of unit (3370).

Unit (3370) is quite disturbed by the mole rats. It is a deposit which has chunks of plaster, mudbrick and mortar, and clayish stuff in it. At the NW corner of the unit, right below the wall, an orange organic residue appeared. Throughout the deposit, there were some small patches of coprolite. One interesting thing about this unit is that, especially on the E parts of the unit, there were a lot of sea shells found. They seem to be a small dump, scattered around the area.

The stone pendant was found in about the middle of the deposit, on the same level as the interestingly shaped clay ball. But the most peculiar thing was that the worked bone came exactly on top of the clay ball. The worked bone was most probably used for making bone rings, but then thrown away because of a crack that probably happened while a ring piece was being tried to snap off. The reason why I am saying this is because there was a crack found on the bone which is an old crack.

This unit has no flotation and archive samples because it was thought to last throuhgout the space and the samples were going to be taken from the middle of the space. But because of the layering interference, the unit number had to change.

Recognition: Top layer in space 160. It is infill.

Definition: By inclusions in soil, seem to be quite typical mixed infill soil, and also by walls on the 4 sides.

Execution: Mattock, pick and trowel.

Condition: Moderately moist on top, moist on the bottom.

Consistency: firm

Colour: soil colour 10 YR 6/3 pale brown; plaster 2.5 Y 8/2 white; clayish stuff 5 YR 5/1 grey; brick pieces 5 YR 4/6 yellowish red

Texture: silty clay

Bedding: massive towards the N, gets layered towards the S because of another deposit

Inclusions: 30% lumps of plaster (quite big pieces), 20% brick aggregates, some clayish-mortar like stuff almost as much as the brick, 2% flecks and small pieces of charcoal, some phytolith (<2%)

Post-depositional Features: lots of animal holes, insect and plant activity

Basal Boundary: arbitrary

Unit description: This is a medium-sized unit consisting of bones found around the bear paw. The most interesting piece is the articulated right heel of a young animal of a small equid species. The heel area was severed at both upper and lower ends; cut marks remain. Another large-sized animal is represented by a polished scapula fragment, also bearing traces of human modification as it has been snapped off at both the upper and lower ends of the blade. There is one cattle tooth. The rest of the material is from sheep-sized animals and includes a few long bone fragments, an upper molar, and parts of a scapula and pelvis. X3 is a piece of worked bone: a sheep/goat femur distal shaft, which has been grooved in preparation for making bone rings. Last Number = 37.
