Unit description: Bone is entirely from >4mm flotation sample 2. There are only 6 bits - all teeth. 3 pieces are from sheep-sized animal, burnt brown and each less than 1cm (seemingly old breaks); 3 pieces are from cattle sized animal, 2 burnt grey/black, less than 2 cm and with old breaks, and one unburnt with fresh breaks. In sum, the teeth in this tiny unit are mostly burnt and shattered. (2003): Found the rest of sample 2, which changes the picture substantially. It is a good-size sample, mostly small crumbles but a fair number of larger pieces. Most are burnt to varying degrees, mostly low-temperature. There is a lot of digested bone, also burnt at least in part. This seems to argue against the bone being used as fuel/raw material for lime. While the surface condition is variable, many seem rather worn or weathered. Most is sheep-size, with some large mammal, and few diagnostics. There is a little perinatal sheep/goat. There is a little fish, amphibian, and bird. There is little coherence. This looks like a bit of midden or other discard that was partially exposed (upper part not covered for some time), and probably burnt postdepositionally (fire lit on top). There is nothing like the same intensity of burning seen in other 'lime burning' areas. There is also a striking amount of dog poop.
