Unit 4947
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 4 x 1.5-1.6 x 0.1-0.2m
Discussion: With a diffuse transition mixed infill 4921/ 4943 gave onto a slightly more uniform and generally lighter coloured (because more plastery) deposit. In the northern half (below 4921) it appeared at a higher level to the east than to the west. In the southern half against the east wall a possible plank (or two) had been laid/ collapsed on the top of 4947. 4947 did not extend to the south section in the space where 4943 overlay 5210 directly. In the section left against the north wall a clear distinction was evident between 4921 and 4947 at a height of 1003.76; in fact 4947 was begun at a slightly higher level (c 1003.85) here.
At a level of c 1003.7 the deposit was gridded out in anticipation of the floor but this was not found and the grid was amended (see 5209).
Recognition: More plastery deposit underlying 4921/ 4943
Execution: Mattock
Condition: Slightly moist
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Generally pale to mid brown
Texture: Silty clay (plastery)
Bedding: Massive but heterogeneous
Inclusions: Perhaps 20% consists of coherent lumps/ lenses of dark grey-brown mud brick and white/ yellowish plaster. Charcoal very infrequent except for 'plank' in south east and a few medium fragments
Post-depositional Features: Not evident
Basal Boundary: Generally clear, diffuse in places (this over 4910), arbitrary (over 5209 etc)
