Discussion: 4953 was a homogeneous deposit of sandy silt material that formed the base/make-up of oven F533. Its uppermost surface was scorched to a reddish-brown in places especially towards it's outer edge where it was baked into a hard crust. However, this material was not clearly distinguishable from that beneath it that filled the hollow provided by cut 4958. The central area of the hearth may have been removed or trampled away, leaving a softer surface in this area, so it is difficult to determine the exact structure of the oven. It appears to represent the oven that was contemporary to the use of the floors included within unit 4791.
