Unit 4988
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: clean floors and make-up
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mixed; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.94m (E-W), 1.07m (N-S), 0.04m deep
Discussion: 4988 was a compound layer made up of a clayey orange floor layer (5090) overlying a more mixed clay/ plaster/ ash layer (what appears to have been a levelling deposit) in building 23/ space 178. It appears to represent the 'clean' floor layer and make-up deposit that was contemporary to the 'dirty' floor layer (4987) to its east and was overlain by the same orange clayey floor surface. The existence of a continuous floor surface within this deposit, distinguishes it from the later floor deposits in the area in which there was scanty evidence of clear floor surfaces. This could suggest that the area was used differently in this earlier phase, or otherwise that the floors were resurfaced more frequently and so have survived more intact.
Consistency: mainly friable, but firm where it was very dry
Colour: varied - pale orange brown and pale greyish-brown
Texture: varied - silty clay and clayey silt
Bedding: compound layered - two distinct layers
Inclusions: 2-5% charcoal, 2% plaster, flecks of shell, phytoliths and tiny pebbles
Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation and seriously cracked
Basal Boundary: sharp and distinct to the west, sloping from west to east. To the east where it interleaved with contemporary 'dirty' floor layers, it was less distinct
