Unit 8863
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: levelling layer
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: external; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: N-S ca 2 m; E-W - ca. 3.60 m
Discussion: The unit comprises a layer of construction rubble and midden, mixed together. The colour differs from the midden layer to the S and the gray plastery ashy surface, which was above (U. 8858). The layer is pale orange to gray, firm and compact. It containd few animal bones and obsidian chips, few charcoal and pottery sherds. It could be a levelling layer against the walls to the N.
The next thing we have to do is to scrape out the midden layer to the S of U. 8863.
After further cleaning and investigation, the unit was exposed to S and SE to include construction rubble in the pit, U. 8862 and further to the cut/burial construction U. 8871. It means that it also abuts the curved feature in the NE part of sp. 226. It is important to notice the sequence: 8863 is underneath/later the midden (or at least yet excavated midden) 8854, 8859, 8864 and 8869; it partially fills the pit (U. 8862, 8863) but lies on top of (in the W, N and E part) of 8870. The conclusion so far is that it had the same function as U. 8870 and underlying yet unnamed units of ''middeny packing'' as well as the brick fragments abutting the N wall of sp. 226. This function is probably levelling the NE part of sp. 226 (''cul de sac''). We are going to take a micromorphology block from this unit, which hopefully will help us understand whether this area was or was not used for any specific kind of activity.
