Unit 21171

Category: Layer    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Infill

Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: heterogeneous

Discussion: Infill in a foundation trench abutting wall f. 3678. The trench, or pit, was dug to be able to erect the wall. Infill was then put in the trench. During excavation, two unit numbers were used for the infill: 21171 and 21301. They are parts of the same infill but were excavated arbitrarily.

The cut for the foundation trench, and the infill, was easy to distinguish during excavation. The infill had a smaller amount of charcoal in it. Therefore the infill could be seen as a clear line. The line was not as easy to see in the north due to debries of brick, making it less clear. In the south, the infill was more yellowish and firm. Parts of it was seen on the top of the midden. This is presumed to be because debries of brick has sloped down on top of it. The southern part of the infill was first seen as a seperate unit, u. 21143.

The unit was excavated whith mattock and pick-axe.
