Unit 20221
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: mud-brick collapse,room fill
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: external; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: U. 20221 is a mottled deposit containing a great deal of mud brick. Left unexcavated at end of 2012 season.
2013: There were many pits cut into this layer, recognized and dug in 2013. (F.3985, 7162, 7163, 7165, and f. 7166). It is an extremely heterogeneous deposit post-dating the construction and initial collapse of the Neolithic structures in this trench. At the bottom of this unit, we came down on several features including two walls (7177 and 7174) as well as a pit (7178). The basal boundary seemed clear-- we came down on these many architectural features as well as platform 7173 except in the SE corner of the trench which seems to be a network of animal burrows through this unit, possibly mixed with others. This unit was what sp. 515 was filled with, consistent with late Neolithic practices of not systematically filling in rooms post-abandonment
Recognition: found inititally after removing u20156, total extent under u20269
Definition: clear-- color difference from surrounding units
Consistency: loose to friable
Colour: mottled, orange and grey
Texture: sandy clay loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: mud brick, charcoal
Post-depositional Features: extensive pitting, animal burrows
Basal Boundary: clear-- came down on platform f.7173 and inside of sp. 515 -> although in SE corner there was an apparent pit (f. 7178) and a deep hole consisting of a network of animal burrows
