Unit 22080
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: make-up layer,room-fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Description: the deposit (22080) within the upper part of the infill of B.132.
Discussion: The layer U.22080 was placed within the upper part of overloaded structure of B.132. It was restricted from three sides by walls of the mentioned edifice. Consequently, its limits were appointed from the North by F.7584, from the East by F.7149 and from the West by 7346. The southern limit was established arbitrarily and it was set along the remaining edge of the foundation cut U.22076 oriented E-W. The deposit consisted of more or less fragmented building material that might be presented as follows: plaster, crushed bricks, mortar, superstructures of fire installations. Within the unit in its southern part several pits of different kind (F.7623, 7600, 7601, 7602) as well as a small scoop (F.7622) were found. They might have been related probably with symbological activities aiming to prepare place before erection of walls of B.77.
Interpretation of the deposit assigned during the 2014 excavation season under unit number 22080 is complicated due to many reasons. Taking into consideration its placement within the interior of B.132, one may state that layer is typical example of a room-fill. The above assumption seems to be supported by the characteristic of registered material. However, there are also more convincing premises that allow to interpret the deposit as a make-up layer that had been set within the older structure (B.132) to prepare ground for new building (B.77), directly on the top of uneven surface of the room-fill, that was deposited within the abandoned interior of the B.132. The mentioned interpretation finds some arguments especially within the southern part of the unit, where remnants of several activities had been recorded (F.7622, F.7623, F.7601, F.7602, F.7600, U.22092). However, the most remarkable data were related with discovering three circular pits (F.7632, 7633, 7634) in eastern and central part of the structure beneath the layer (U.22080). They might be regarded as foundation burials executed on top of the surface of actual room-fill (U.21622) and then covered by make-up (U.22080).The latter must have been involved with special kind of practices that symbolically prepared the place for erection the younger structure. Hence, the interpretation involved with the deposit (U.22080) as a make-up seems to be more persuasive.
Unfortunately in 2014 season it was impossible to fully accomplish the exploration of the presented layer. Its most N-E part had to be left unexcavated due to number of burials located within the mentioned area. The locale is related with the platform (of B.77, Sp.336) and its close vicinity. Consequently the exploration of that part has been postponed by reason of closing the season.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
