Unit 2727
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: accumulated deposit,floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mixed; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: x min 50 mm thick and max 30 mm
Discussion: Originally this appeared to be patches of 'floor' material to the south in the oven cavity consisting of compound layers of plaster; what appeared to be mud plaster and ashy silt all in small patches with appearance of localised re-plastering as repair. However on excavation this small area grew and the floors were traced below (2733) and (2736) and ran up to and lipped up to the southern wall and the platform edge to the west. It now appears that this deposit represents accumulative floors and occupation debris/trample giving the appearance of floors. Quite how it works with the oven deposit I'm not clear, it would appear that the burnt/scorched horizon (see section 97/366) was sealed by floors and used before the 2nd oven wall (2398) was constructed which would mean that the 'rim' (2733) was never there but were also accumulated floor deposits. Hmmm!
NB A second archive was taken to compare and contrast.

Having excavated more floors in this space (2756), it's now not so clear that the 'floor' deposits in the oven were the same as the surrounding area. Because of disturbance subsequent to the 1960's excavation these floors were very difficult to trace or excavate individually, they were only apparent by their packing nature, I.e. came off in slices, therefore it is now not clear whether these floors I.e. in the area and surrounding were actually the same.

Having overlaid plans it appears that burial 264 is cut through (2727). this isn't 100% certain but pretty confident and therefore the matrix has been changed accordingly.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
