Discussion: Solid lump of plaster to E of oven in NW corner of bin 257. Choice of 3 interpretations;

A) It's W end (with abrupt almost vertical edge)is in line with (although slightly different angle) the cut for bin 257 which truncates oven 268 to its E. It could be that the cut extended further N and that this si part of original bin wall structure built straight after oven was truncated. In favour of this interpretation is:

I) it is, in line with cut (difference in angle accounted for by collapse after truncation?)
ii) there are remnants of plaster within brown deposit along same alignment as this to E of it (3309).
If this wall was truncated this could be remnants of original wall of bin and the same as (3302).

B) This is part of original structure of oven and survives as a strange looking lump because elsewhere it has been truncated by bin cut and has been left to provide the beginning (W end) of wall for bin 257. Therefore to its S it is truncated. There is a plaster deposit above oven doorway which is similar in contour although not as hard. On W of doorway the structure protrudes out towards N somewhat like a "porch" to the oven entrance. The oven structure has a similar shape to the W. Maybe this "porch" continued all around oven entrance and the area to the W has been truncated or collapsed.
Against this idea (I) (3302) ends very abruptlyin the W as if it has been truncated of as if it is built up against a cut face. (ii) there seems to be no scorching on W face of (3302) unlike the other inner surfaces of the oven although this could be explained by the oven lining collapsing later but before it was backfilled. (iii) the remnant of plaster above entrance of oven is not that similar in consistancy to (3302) although it is much thinner and difference may be due to differential burning
iv) if this hypothesis is true it has been truncated (uneven, irregular surface) and the E seems very smooth straight and regular, not at all like it had been hacked through to build a bin.

C) It is a repair to original structure of oven which has been truncated by bin cut later. I'm not very keen on this one because of reasons above (B) (ii) and (iv).

I think it is solution A) and have done the matrix accordingly (15/8/98).

Recognition: Bright white clay/plaster revealed after (3187) and (3197) were removed.

Definition: Tapers down to E with a rough surface, to W stops vertically and to N and S very steep slope approx. line.

Execution: Leaf 100% excavated.

Condition: Very dry, hard, covered.

Consistency: very strong

Colour: 10 YR 8/2 very pale brown

Texture: 10% clay, 10% medium sand, 80% silt (plaster)

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: occasional charcoal flecks <1 mm diameter usually although some larger, 2% rare small bone frags. <5 mm, occasional 1% white flecks (pure lime), occasional 5% lenses of mid brown silt

Post-depositional Features: possibly broken or truncated to E

Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/sloping down to N at about 3 in 1 for 0.09 m then drops dramatically about 1 in 6 (see sketch of profile P.T.O)/abrupt change of deposit at base/fairly smooth
