Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: bin wall

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: bin; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.46 m E-W x 0.52 m N-S, 0.12 m wide, 0.06 m high

Discussion: White plaster/clay walls for bin F.256. Thought that oven F.268 truncated horizontally from above leaving roof of oven still intact coming out of beginning of walls. (3374) and (3353) for bin F.256 added on top of this. The walls straddle both the truncated top of oven and the untruncated front (see sketch profile on unit sheet).

Seem to be simple build unlike complicated sequence of bin F.257 to E. This bin only has (3353), (3374) and (3367) for its walls and uses wall F.79 to S and wall F.93 to W. A N/S baulk section was left for micromorphology sample (3365/53). This section was drawn [98-422] and afterwards the rest of (3353) was excavated.

Recognition: The top has been visible since last year but when (3175) was removed it was seen as a separate deposit from oven build being a vey light brown/grey silty clay with horizontal boundary with oven beneath it.

Definition: Rectangular (? S side) deposit "C" -shaped. Abutts wall F.71 in S and wall F.93 in W.

Execution: Leaf, trowel. Initially 1/2 sectioned EW and aslo small baulk left N/S for micromorphology.

Condition: Dry, covered, been exposed since last year.

Consistency: hard

Colour: 2.5 YR 7/2 light grey

Texture: clay 50% silt 50%

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: 5% white flecks <3 mm of salts/phytoliths, 1% grey silt lenses, <1 % charcoal flecks <5 mm

Post-depositional Features: truncated to E by last year's baulk section (N/S), salts

Basal Boundary: anthrpogenic/horizontal/smooth; oven F.268 thought to be truncated horizontally then wals (3353) placed on top; surface walls slope down to within oven and S towards outside
