Unit 3375

Category: Cluster    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: Organic dump

Data Category Information: Location: midden; Material: organic - like; Deposition: secondary deposition

Dimensions: 3m x 3.3m x c.50mm thick

Discussion: Dump layer - with midden components though not rich in charcoal and ash as overlying midden deposits' characteristics of space 115.
Contained frequent patches of phytoliths and organic material very similar to cluster 3364 which was a lot more concentrated phytolith and yellow organic material, Possibly high content of dung and therefore same event as 3364.

Recognition: Yellow flakey deposit similar to 3364 although more dry and less concentrated in appearance. Comes off easily following some horizon like 3364.

Definition: Defined on SE by ashy deposit, on S by extent of excavation (midden section), on N by extent of excavation. Appearance is less yellowey further away from the ashy deposit.

Execution: Trowel.

Condition: In SE, very dry. Problems therefore in seeing extent on surface, due to heavy breaking. Becomes more damp elsewhere.

Consistency: Friable near surface (possibly because of being dry); multiple layers of phytolith broke off easily, but generally it is firm (possibly of being damp).

Colour: 10YR 5/2, 6/3, 5/3 (light brownish grey, pale brown, brown) with thin lenses of 10YR 7/6 (yellow).

Texture: Sandy silt loam.

Bedding: Generally massive with layered lenses of phytoliths and yellow material. Phytolith layers are roughly parallel; slopes down from east to west; discontinuous layers.

Inclusions: Phytoliths variable density 20-30%; artefactual remains 2%, rare obsidian flafes < 2cm; coprolite, hackberries, shell <2%; aggregates <2%; natural stone <2%. Inclusions increased towards the northern end of the layer - clayball, bone and shell. Charcoal inclusions were fairly throughout <2%. Plaster chunks appeared around the NE area closer to skeleton (we have noted aa large chunk of plaster in 3314 on the opposite side of the skeleton).

Post-depositional Features: Root disturbance fairly frequent.

Basal Boundary: Contrast found but clear interface confirmed our expectations that there was infact a discernable difference. At base of aforementioned horizon occasional fine lenses of phytoliths and yellow material further continue our basal boundry. The basal boundry was very wavy towards the south and very smooth in the northern half.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
