Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: In Situ Fireplace

Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit

Dimensions: 0.6 m E-W x 0.4 m N-S x c. 50 mm thick extend in N section.

Discussion: The darkest brown deposit is centred in the N part of the unit abutting the midden section/extent of excavation. It appears therefore that the centre of the fire extends into the section. The edges of the unit are more grey, gradually fading out into the surrounding unit 3375. The greatest concentration of inclusions (charcoal, bone and clayball) are also in the northern area. The mixed deposit of area show up clearly in the midden a section as white, yellow and brown lenses. A clay ball is visible in the section in what appears to be middle of the fire. Interesting to note proximity to larger fire place 2m Southeast (3600,3601).

Recognition: Area of burning easily discernable from surrounding unit 3375. Burnt areas slope off into surrounding horizon on W, SW, S and E.

Definition: See above. On N abutts and continiues under section of midden and extent of excavation.

Execution: Trowel.

Condition: Good.

Consistency: Friable.

Colour: (see sketch) NE area (a): 10YR 8/1-7/1, white-light gray, mixed with patches of 10 YR 6/6-5/6, brownish yellow-yellowish brown and 10YR 6/4-5/4 light yelowish brown - yellowish brown. Middle patch (b): 10 YR 3/1-3/2, very dark gray-very dark grayish brown. NW area (c): 10 YR 5/3-5/4-4/3-4/4, brown-yellowish brown-dark yellowish brown. S area (d): 10 YR 6/1-6/2, gray-light brownish gray. Further down in N area abutting midden section (area a) deposit becomes darker, dominated by 10YR 4/2-3/2, dark greyish brown-very dark grayish brown, therefore same as area b on sketch plan.
