Discussion: (3626) represents a dark grey greasy layer which overlay much of the area of the mid-SW quadrant of space 117, to the W of the platform edge (see sketch plan). It was described, after last year's uncovering as 'floor packing'. This was shown to cover a smaller area in the end of season plan but the difference between (3626) 'floor packing' and the 'floor' layer shown to its E, was impossible to tell in excavation. Both were 'dirty' plaster layers, with odd lenses of ash and plaster. However, since it was not possible to separate (3626) from the layers beneath to the E side of the layer, compacted chunks of the layer beneath may have been incorporated in the unit that was removed. (3626) lipped up to the platform edge and overlay several alternate layers of mixed plaster/ashy deposits. This supports its original interpretation as some sort of packing deposit. If this is so, it is difficult to explain the presence of the 3 x-finds in it. They could have been intentional deposits or just part of a generally rubbishy layer.

Recognition: A dark grey, greasy spread overlying a variety of ashy/plaster layers.

Definition: Defined by the material difference.

Execution: Trowel/leaf.

Condition: Very dry + cracked.

Consistency: very firm

Colour: various, mainly 2.5 Y 6/2 light brownish grey

Texture: ashy/chalky clay

Bedding: compound layered

Inclusions: 2% charcoal flecks, 5% clay (flecks and small pieces), 2% plant silicates

Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation/???

Basal Boundary: A very irregular /wavy basal boundary. To the W end where the deposit was damper this was sharp and distinct. The E end underlay the canvas protection placed over the area after last season's excavation and was very compacted, hard and cracked. It was therefore impossible to remove as a single layer so the basal boundary was undefinable.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
